OPERA CAN NO LONGER IGNORE ITS RACE PROBLEM. “Porgy and Bess,” which opened the Metropolitan Opera’s most recent season, featured an almost exclusively Black cast but was directed and conducted by white men — an example of how the art form has historically elevated some singers of color while remaining overwhelmingly white offstage.
